ASMINS01US Insidious Sevens Boardgame Asmodee Editions Players: 2 to 5Playing Time: 30 minutesAges: 9 and up Insidious Sevens is a trick-taking game, in which players make a prediction and then try to win exactly that number of tricks. This sounds exactly like a number of other classic and commercial games, but the similarities end there. The game includes several unique additions to the genre, intended to increase the challenge and complexity of play, without making it as hard to get into as bridge. Firstly, there is a passing round at the beginning of each hand, similar to Hearts, so players have an opportunity to customize their hands somewhat. Next, in what is probably the games most unusual feature, the bidding is done simultaneously, using a card from ones hand, rather than vocally. Thus, your bidding options can be limited. Furthermore, the color (suit) of the highest-bid card determines the trump, and its owner takes the lead. High bids can be very rewarding (taking 5, 6 or all 7 tricks is not uncommon) , but risky, as being outbid can result in having committed to taking a huge number of tricks, while not getting the trump one wanted. Finally, unlike most games in the genre, which force players to follow suit, here players must follow either color (suit) or number. Thus, if you play a Blue 6, opponents could play any 6 (including the 6 of trump) or any Blue card. This is why the colors have an order of strength. The scoring system is also geared towards higher aggression than a classic game like Oh Hell. Making ones bid nets 2 points plus the number of tricks bid, while missing results in a loss of 1 point for every under- or over-trick. This makes the number of tricks taken count for a lot, making a zero bid is often easy, but wins only 2 points. Bidding five and getting it gets 7. It is much harder to sit on a lead in Insidious Sevens than other games in this genre, making for a more exciting endgame.
