The Future of Batterer Programs: Reassessing Evidence-Based Practice

$28.38

Batterer programs are at a critical juncture, with a handful of experimental program evaluations showing little or no effect from the prevailing program approach. This finding has prompted calls to overhaul or replace such programs. Edward W. Gondolf examines batterer research in light of the push for "evidence-based practice" and advocates a progressive evolution of batterer intervention as it currently stands. Cautioning against the call for programs based on a "new psychology," he argues that current cognitive-behavioral approaches are appropriate for most cases, with the addition of ongoing risk management for severely violent men. Overall, he promotes a broader picture of batterer intervention and advocates better implementation of the basic principles established in the criminal justice field.

Implementing Evidence-Based Practices in Community Corrections and Addiction Treatment

Implementing Evidence-Based Practices in Community Corrections and Addiction Treatment

$179.00
View Product

Community corrections programs are emerging as an effective alternative to incarceration for drug-involved offenders, to reduce recidivism and improve public health and public safety. Since evidence-based practice is gaining recognition as a success factor in both community systems and substance abuse treatment, a merger of the two seems logical and desirable. But integrating evidence-based addiction treatment into community corrections is no small feat costs, personnel decisions, and effective, appropriate interventions are all critical considerations. Featuring the first model of implementation strategies linking these fields, "Implementing Evidence-Based Practices in Community Corrections and Addiction Treatment "sets out criteria for identifying practices and programs as evidence. The book s detailed blueprint is based on extensive research into organizational factors (e.g, management buy-in) and external forces (e.g, funding, resources) with the most impact on the adoption of evidence-based practices, and implementation issues ranging from skill building to quality control. With this knowledge, organizations can set realistic, attainable goals and achieve treatment outcomes that reflect the evidence base. Included in the coverage: Determining evidence for what works. Organization change and technology transfer: theory and literature review. The current state of addiction treatment and community corrections. Unique challenges of evidence-based addiction treatment under community supervision. Assessing suitability of evidence-based practice in real-world settings.A conceptual model for implementing evidence-based treatment in community corrections. "Implementing Evidence-Based Practices in Community Corrections andAddiction Treatment"is a breakthrough volume for graduate- and postgraduate-level researchers in criminology, as well as policymakers and public health researchers.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Research: Evidence-Based Practice and Practice-Based Evidence

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Research: Evidence-Based Practice and Practice-Based Evidence

$293.17

Before the 1960s, psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy were the dominant modes of treatment within psychiatry. These treatments have faced increasing scrutiny and skepticism as the movement towards evidence-based treatments has intensified and the mental health field has been asked to treat increasingly ill and severely character-disordered patients. Psychodynamic psychotherapy has lost status within the mental health field as other forms of treatment have developed a strong and well-funded research base. At the same time, the exciting bursts of knowledge about the functioning of the brain and the subsequent development of psychopharmacologic treatments have added to treatment alternatives. This development has served to help patients but also to decrease the frequency with which dynamic treatments are indicated. Criticisms of psychoanalytic treatments, which are grounded in elaborate theories of the mind that have been evolving since the late 19th century, have been valid to the extent that a scientific basis for the work was missing. Recently, however, there has been an explosion in empirical research on psychoanalytic theories and treatments. There have been more than 70 randomized controlled trials of psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, and much more research supporting psychodynamic principles and specific psychodynamic treatments for many diagnostic categories. In this volume of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Research: Evidence-Based Practice and Practice-Based Evidence we demonstrate the relevance of and scientific support for psychodynamic treatment across a wide range of diagnostic categories and treatment strategies. One of the difficulties in the field of psychodynamic psychotherapy is that researchers and clinicians have not embraced one another. Clinicians have felt that researchers are ivory tower academics not on the front lines of clinical care, and researchers have felt that clinicians have little appreciation for the value of empi

This is an excellent review of the development of self-care deficit theory and the use of self-care in nursing practice. Explanations of the various theories and theory terms are well done and written at a level that novice theorists can relate to. The authors demonstrate how self-care science can be fiscally and effectively applied to the care of patients/clients."-Doody's Medical Reviews Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Theory has been used as a foundation for nursing practice in healthcare institutions and as the basis of curricula in nursing schools for decades. This book explores the high-level theory of the application of Orem's Self-Care Theory, and how it can improve patient outcomes as well as cost-effectiveness of nursing care delivery. Written for nursing theorists, researchers, administrators, and graduate students, the text addresses the relationship of self-care theory and evidence-based care in nursing, and provides a solution to improving contemporary healthcare outcomes. The book is divided into three sections. Section one discusses the reason for the existence of the nursing profession, and identifies the performance of self-care. Section two covers three nursing practice sciences-wholly compensatory nursing, partly compensatory nursing, and supportive educative nursing. Section three offer suggestions on how health care organizations can incorporate this broadened perspective of what constitutes evidence based practice and on-going research methodology into every-day delivery of nursing services. Key Features: Includes case examples to illustrate the application of theory to nursing practice Provides a current, cost-effective resource for implementing Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory for effective evidence-based practice Builds the link between the application of Orem's Self Care Theory and improved patient and fiscal healthcare outcomes
