Benjamin Franklin believed in bettering the world around him. Never patenting or receiving financial reward, Franklin believed that his inventions and improvements were meant only to benefit society. Beginning with the invention of swim flippers at the age of 14, he went on to invent the glass armonica, the Franklin stove, and the bifocals. He also made useful improvements to such things as street lamps and the urinary catheter. Arguably, his most important invention was the lightning rod. Since first proposing the use of rods to draw electrical fire from the clouds in 1750, his invention has saved millions of structures from fire. This hiking medallion measures 1 3/4H X 1 1/2W.

Bodie Island Hiking Medallion

Bodie Island Hiking Medallion

$4.95
View Product

The Bodie Island Lighthouse has faced a lot of adversity in its time. Though it was contracted in 1837, complications with purchasing the land caused construction delays, and the original lighthouse wasn't finished until 1847. The project overseer was Thomas Blount, who had no experience with lighthouses and refused to listen to Francis Gibbons, the contracted engineer. Blount's mistakes resulted in an unstable foundation, causing the lighthouse to lean dangerously. In 1859, a second lighthouse was built and was considerably more stable, but it was blown up by Confederate troops in 1861 during the Civil War. Finally, in 1872, the third Bodie Island Lighthouse was built, standing 156 feet tall and 40 miles away from the original location of the first two lighthouses. Our Bodie Island Hiking Medallion displays a sunnier view of the lighthouse - sunnier than its history. Pin our medallion onto your hiking stick to symbolize the fascinating history behind the huge, striped lighthouse.Product DetailsExplore Cape Hatteras National Seashore in the Outer Banks, North Carolina to discover more about the Bodie Island Lighthouse.Medallion has a 1.25'' length and a 1.75'' heightThree metal pins included

Hopewell Furnace, in Berks County, Pennsylvania, is typical of the iron making communities that flourished in 18th and 19th century America. Hopewell's cold-blast charcoal furnace produced pig iron and castings from 1771 until 1883, when technological developments in iron production rendered this ''iron plantation'' obsolete. The center of the iron works is the distinctive Cast House, where molten iron from the furnace was turned into trade goods for a growing nation. The building now represents Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, the first National Park established to preserve the industrial history of the United States. This hiking medallion comes complete with nails to attach to your hiking stick and measures about 3.75 inches wide.

The history of the El Yunque National Forest is extremely rich. The Taino Indians, who inhabited the island and called it Boriken, believed that the cloud capped peaks in the Luquillo mountains, which they called Yuke, were a sacred place occupied by the good spirit Yokahu to whom they prayed for protection from the bad spirit Juracan (Hurricane) . From the Taino word Yuke the Spanish colonizers derived El Yunque to refer to these mountains.
